In this report for Midweek, Austin Mitchell reveals how gender divisions are reinforced from the moment a child begins school, with boys learning manual skills such as woodwork while girls study home economics. When it's time to enter the workplace, women earn less money than men and enjoy fewer financial benefits and incentives.

This report was one of a number filed by journalist Austin Mitchell in the year that he worked for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ while taking a break from his duties at Yorkshire Television for ITV. He joined Yorkshire in 1969 and continued to work there until 1977 presenting the local news programme Calendar. He became the Member of Parliament for Great Grimsby after a by-election in 1977.
