1974: Pandas settle into their new home at London Zoo

It's been 50 years since Chia Chia and Ching Ching arrived in London Zoo in September 1974, within three weeks as people flocked to see the adolescent pandas.

Given to Edward Heath by the Chinese Government, they went on to . London Zoo sought money to help build a home for the pandas, and the Foreign Office feared failure to do so would be seen as a snub to Beijing.

In this Nationwide clip, Zoo Keeper George Callard spoke about their diet whilst preparing their daily food.

Despite high hopes, the pair never did breed together.
