2001: Foot-and-mouth scare at UK abattoir

A five-mile exclusion zone is placed around an abattoir in Essex after a suspected case of foot-and-mouth disease was detected on 19 February 2001.

Two days later, it was confirmed as the UK’s first case of the disease for 20 years.

Foot-and-mouth is a highly infectious viral disease that can affect cattle, pigs, sheep and goats.
