1981: First London Marathon

The first London Marathon is held on 29 March 1981.

Thousands of participants run the 26 mile route from Greenwich Park, in south east London, to Buckingham Palace.

The sportsmanship of the event is evident as American Dick Beardsley and Norwegian Inge Simonsen win the race, crossing through the tape hand in hand after two hours, 11 minutes and 48 seconds.

About seven hours after the start of the race, Marie Dominique de Groot from Paris and David Gaiman from East Grinstead hold hands as they became the final contestants to pass the finish line.

Originally broadcast on 29 March 1981.
