Children's author Enid Blyton speaks to Marjorie Anderson about her own childhood, how she defied her family's expectations by becoming a writer and how she tries to "get to the hearts of children" in all her stories. Blyton's favourite character, George (Georgina) Kirrin, is one of the heroines of the Famous Five series.

The first Famous Five book, Five on a Treasure Island, was published in 1942. Twenty-one stories featuring the courageous quintet were published in all, with a new book appearing every year until 1963, with the sole exception of 1959.
