1994: Man receives the world's first bionic heart

A man received the world’s first battery-operated heart on 26 August 1994.

The pioneering operation was carried out at Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire.

The technology was not a replacement for the human heart, but could keep patients alive until a heart became available for transplant.
