Dancing policemen, steel bands and floats all feature in this news report about a successful day on the newly expanded carnival route. The Metropolitan Police Band plays, the children smile and a good time is had by all.

Carnival began in Trinidad, where the first event was held in 1833 to mark an end to slavery in the Caribbean.

The first Notting Hill Carnival took place in 1964, encouraging people of all races to take to the streets and express themselves socially and artistically. By 1976, this distinctly Caribbean event was attracting around 150,000 people and it is now Europe's largest carnival.
