Opening of the Skye Bridge, 1995

The Skye Bridge was opened on 16 October 1995.

The new bridge replaced the centuries-old ferry service, which transported people between the Isle of Skye and mainland Scotland.

It was met with protests over the tolls being charged, which were initially the highest tolls in Europe. The campaign continued until the bridge was bought out by the Scottish Government, when tolls were abolished.
