From Harry Potter to Purely Belter, find out about some of the movies that have been filmed in Tyneside and Northumberland.

Tyneside and Northumberland have played a starring role in many movies over the years.

From Alnwick Castle to the Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides, a huge variety of urban and rural locations across the region have made it onto the big screen.

We've compiled a list of some of these films below, so scroll down for some fun film facts and click on the links for more pictures and information about some of the films.

Alnwick Castle by Terry Cavner

Alnwick Castle has been used in many films

Harry Potter

Alnwick Castle played a starring role in the first two Harry Potter films as it was transformed into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry which Harry attends.

One of the most impressive scenes filmed there (for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) saw Harry crash land a flying car into Alnwick Castle's inner bailey.

Elizabeth (1998)

This film starring Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth I used a variety of historic locations in Northumberland, including Warkworth Castle, Bamburgh Castle, Alnwick Castle and Aydon Castle.

The film's producers said Northumberland "just had the right look".

Gateshead multistorey car park

The infamous Get Carter car park

Get Carter (1971)

Mike Hodges' cult crime thriller starring Michael Caine was set on Tyneside.

Hodges said he wanted to find "a really hard place" to set the film and Newcastle fitted the bill.

One of the most well-known landmarks associated with the film is the Trinity Square multistorey car park in Gateshead.

In the film Jack Carter (played by Caine) throws Cliff Brumby (Brian Moseley) off one of the top levels of the car park.

Billy Elliot (2000)

Billy Elliot, the story of a young boy who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer, was shot entirely in the North East.

Billy's story is set against the backdrop of the miners' strike and the mining sequences were shot at Ellington and Lynemouth in Northumberland.

Actor Chris Beattie in Purely Belter

Purely Belter used riverside locations

Purely Belter (2000)

This bittersweet comedy about the dreams of two Geordie teenagers used many different Tyneside locations, from the Swing Bridge to Dunston Staithes and even the Bigg Market toilets!

Becket (1964)

Becket was shot at Bamburgh Castle and beach, Alnwick Castle and Seahouses harbour in 1963.

Its star Richard Burton and his wife Liz Taylor stayed at the Tilmouth Park Hotel in Cornhill-on-Tweed, and made The Salmon at Belford their "local" drinking haunt.

Cul-de-Sac (1966)

Roman Polanski's dark thriller was set on Holy Island. The remote outcrop was the ideal place to create the tense, claustrophobic setting Polanski wanted.

The stars of the film are said to have tried to turn Holy Island into a mini version of Hollywood.

French star Francois Dorleac arrived with twenty large suitcases and a hairless chihuahua that she had smuggled into Britain in her handbag and Lionel Stander had 20lbs of pastrami shipped to the island from New York.

Polanski also made use of Northumberland's wild landscapes and craggy coastline in his film Macbeth.

Gabriel & Me (2001)

Gabriel & Me is a comedy fantasy about a teenage boy obsessed with angels, starring Billy Connolly and Sean Landless.

The industrial landscape of Tyneside provides a perfect backdrop and locations used include the shipyards, the River Tyne waterfront and the Byker Wall.

The Freeman Hospital was used for the scenes where Jimmy Spud's dad is ill in hospital.

One of the most unusual locations seen in the film is the old Tyne Dock engineering site.

The One and Only (2002)

Romantic comedy The One and Only starring Patsy Kensit was filmed on Tyneside.

Most of the action is set on the quayside with key locations including the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the Gateshead riverside.

One of the scenes towards the end of the film - a wedding party - takes place on the top of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.

Other places in the film include Tynemouth, Wallsend, North Tyneside General Hospital and the Angel of the North.

Dream On (1991)

Dream On is a gritty drama exploring the troubled lives of women on the Meadow Well estate in North Shields - and most of it was shot on the real-life estate.

It was made by the Newcastle-based Amber films and writer Kitty Fitzgerald worked with the Meadow Well community for five years before the film was made.

Stormy Monday (1988)

Stormy Monday is an atmospheric film noir set in the seedy nightclub world of Newcastle and it was shot entirely in the city just before the redevelopment of the Quayside.

A derelict building on The Side doubled as the film's Key Club and the Italian Job restaurant on Dean Street doubled as Weegee's Bar.

Other locations included the High Level Bridge, Royal Station Hotel, Newcastle Airport and Hebburn Cokeworks.

On the Night of the Fire (1939)

This was one of the earliest films to be shot in Newcastle and starred Sir Ralph Richardson.

The film's many Quayside and Ouseburn locations included Hanover Street, Dog Leap Stairs, Ouseburn Viaduct and The Tyne Bridge.

The Clouded Yellow (1950)

Trevor Howard and Jean Simmons starred in this 1951 murder thriller about a retired spy. Shot in Newcastle and Durham, this film noir is a rare period piece.

Payroll (1961)

Starring Billie Whitelaw and Tom Bell, Payroll used locations in Newcastle and Gateshead including Lloyd’s Bank building on Grey Street in Newcastle.

Women in Love (1969)

Alan Bates and Glenda Jackson appeared in this film shot at Bedlington Colliery, Gateshead and South Shields by maverick director Ken Russell. Ken Russell also shot his 1971 film The Devils at Bamburgh.

Mary Queen of Scots (1971)

This film took its all-star cast to Bamburgh, Seahouses and Alnwick Castle. Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson starred in the historic drama. By coincidence, the later Elizabeth film starring Cate Blanchett uses some of the same locations as the 1971 movie.

Jude (1996)

Jude took its star Kate Winslet to Blanchland as well as several locations around Durham.
