Black Lives Matter is a movement and foundation which campaigns and protests against systemic racism, violence and unfair treatment of black people in the US and across the world. It was founded in 2013 in the US by three Black female activists called Patrisse Cullers, Opal Tometi and Alicia Garza.

Black Lives Matter started as a hashtag after the release and acquittal of George Zimmerman after he shot and killed Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old teenager. It then became a worldwide movement after the killing of George Floyd by a US police officer. The video of George Floyd’s death was shared on social media, which sparked worldwide outrage, protests and calls for the justice and fair treatment of black people.
