Inside story

We swooped in to meet the producers of Ultimate Adventure, Freddie Martin and Olly Bootle

You say this is Simon’s ultimate adventure, but it starts on a soggy day in London. What’s that about?

Well that sets it up quite nicely. It provides a funny contrast to all the amazing places that Simon has been on his adventures around the world. After visiting more than 100 countries in the past decade, he’s had more than his fair share of excitement and far-flung fun. We thought it would be fun to see if the viewer could help him to get through a miserable day in London.

And how would they do that?

Well, given how far Simon has travelled and the things he has seen you can imagine how many great moments have been captured on film. This is just another way to show these to people, but in this case they get to control which bits they watch. It’s a fun and interactive take on a best-of clips show.

So you get to navigate his journey.

That’s right. The interactivity will allow them to be in control of what they want to see, rather than having to stick to a linear narrative dictated by programme makers.

You’ve worked with Simon before. How did this compare?

Less exotic travel… Shorter time-frame. Less money. But fun.

How was it made?

Freddie spent a couple of weeks getting very square eyes, watching Simon’s entire back catalogue, picking out the best bits. We quickly realized that most of Simon’s hard current affairs – which he’s famous for – wouldn’t work so well for a short, snappy, online audience, so we stuck to the instantly emotive stuff: funny, exciting, scary etc.

Exciting stuff.

We do hope so.
