  2. Highlights on iPlayer at 17:00 GMTpublished at 08:57 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

As with every day of this Ashes series we'll have a highlights show on Â鶹ԼÅÄ iPlayer from 17:00 GMT.

You don't want to miss them. England doing well in an Ashes Test, is there anything better?

You'll be able to find them here at 17:00 GMT.

  3. 'A good session and you'd want to be England'published at 08:55 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

    Steve Harmison
Ex-England pace bowler on BT Sport

I still think you'd rather be in Australia's changing room at the moment, but if you have a good session - and only lose one wicket in the first session for example - you'd rather be in England's changing room.

As soon as England are in the lead there will be doubts in the Australians' minds and they might start to crack with doubts over Josh Hazlewood and pressure building on Pat Cummins.

  4. 'Australia are heavy favourites'published at 08:51 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BT Sport

Australia are still heavy favourites because two wickets, while you're still behind, would change it quite quickly.

England have quite a long tail, but once they get into the red Australia will have to start thinking about boundary riders and how many runs they chase and runs become easier to find too.

  5. What's the game situation?published at 08:49 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

England will resume their second innings on 220-2 when day four starts at 23:30 GMT on Friday night.

They currently trail Australia by 58 runs and will be looking to wipe out that deficit as soon as possible.

Australia will have a new ball after 10 overs - roughly 40 minutes - and that will likely be crucial in deciding the outcome of this game.

Dawid Malan has said England still need another "250-300 runs" to stand any chance of winning of this Test.

Test Match Special and our live text and clip coverage will start at 23:00 GMT - don't miss it.

  6. Day four playing timespublished at 08:47 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

We saw that Alex was asking about the start time on Twitter last night, so to be safe and so you all know what's what here are the session times for day four. We're still making up time that we lost on day one because of the rain - that is why we're starting earlier.

    • First session: 23:30-02:00 GMT
    • Second session: 02:40-04:40 GMT
    • Third session: 05:00-07:00 GMT (play can continue until 07:30 GMT)

Most of you won't have work on Saturday so we'll see when Test Match Special and our live text and clip coverage start at 23:00 GMT and throughout the night!

I was really impressed with the way that Dawid Malan played Nathan Lyon because he is a really difficult bowler for left handers to face.

He was proactive but not too much.

I am a big Dom Sibley fan and was disappointed when he was dropped but I have to agree that Hameed looks more like a Test opener. Credit to him for changing county and working so hard on his game. Burns was unlucky to get 2 great balls but needs a knock too.

England fans can be hopeful that these guys are learning on the job while out in the middle. It's been such a positive day.

  11. 'Rotation of strike was first class'published at 08:38 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

    Steve Harmison
Ex-England pace bowler on BT Sport

There was a lot of pressure on Joe Root when he came out.

The rotation of strike between him and Dawid Malan was first class. Any width or bad balls they looked to put away.

Australia are still significant favourites, but nowhere near as significant as the start of the day. Even if this ends up falling short it may well have changed the course of the series.

This is all we ask for as England fans. We know the Ashes away is hugely challenging, and that Australia are rightly favourites. But to see some fight, some solid defensive organisation and out the bad balls away is very satisfying. A very good day for England - Malan & Root showing the rest of the team how it's done.

  14. 'I've really missed this'published at 08:32 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

Finally from Dawid Malan: "I thought I'd never play another Test again. I actually said to Rooty, when we were both on 40-50 and the Barmy Army were singing that 'I've really missed this'. I've missed someone trying to blow my head off all the time, and the crowd going and the adrenaline pumping."

  15. 'We need another 250-300 more runs'published at 08:32 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

More from Dawid Malan: "It was vitally important that we showed we can compete. The first innings was a disappointment. We hold our hands up that we weren't good enough in that innings - whether the wicket did a little bit or not we are better than being bowled out for 140. For us to come in after a day and a half of hard fielding and do what we did was fantastic but that is only half the job done. We need another 250-300 runs tomorrow to put ourselves in a good position.

  16. Postpublished at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BT Sport

In this game there have been wickets at the start of each session. For whatever reason getting back in has been difficult so Joe Root and Dawid Malan will be crucial in the morning.

If they can do the hard bit and get back in, that is never easy when you are in the 80s, England could be back in it.

It is so exciting, isn't it?

  17. 'Root is great to bat with'published at 08:28 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

More from Dawid Malan: "Joe Root speaks for himself with what he has done in his career. Batting with him is great - he takes the pressure off you because he is always looking to score and he always finds a way to put the pressure back on the bowlers. His method just works everywhere his plays.

"For him to carry on the form has been fantastic and it is a great sign for the team that he is playing well and leading from the front."

Millsy: Well after waking up to that score I think we might win the Ashes lads!

(After we bottom out tomorrow morning before lunch and take the other 4 Tests of course!)

  19. 'The job isn't done yet'published at 08:25 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

More from Dawid Malan: "Our fast bowlers said if we can drag it out and get their bowlers into their fourth and fifth spells it might be slightly easier. It is never easy playing against these guys because they are fantastic bowlers but because of the lack of game plan the longer we can drag it out it'll play into our hands.

"Test cricket is the pinnacle for me. You can do as well as you want in T20 and ODI cricket but you are judged on your Test cricket when you retire so to come to Australia, after India where it turns a lot, where it bounces a lot more is the Test. The job isn't done yet - making an 80 doesn't mean you've made it. It is the big hundreds that can hopefully change a game."

  20. How's stat?!published at 08:22 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

    Andy Zaltzman
    Â鶹ԼÅÄ Test Match Special statistician

There is only one after authentic result where a team has been 278 runs or more behind after the first innings then gone on to win. Not including the abandoned Oval Test in 2006 when Pakistan did not return to the field against England.

The only authentic one is Australia against Sri Lanka at Colombo in 1992. Australia were 291 runs behind and went on to win by 16 runs.
