    Against a team like West Indies, you get away with it, not being disparaging to them. But Pakistan are a level up. Australia or India will blow England away.

    I’ve heard talk that England want to be the number one Test side in the world but they're miles away. Tactically, they get it wrong often and there's question marks on some areas of the team. To start talking about number one team in the world, they're just miles off.

    How can you be number one when you don’t have an out and out spinner? And the two senior seamers, how long can they go on? Then there’s question marks over the wicketkeeper.

  3. There is still hope for England in the form of Ollie Pope, who was the only batsman to stand up against a superb bowling attack.

    With the batters, as soon as they’re put under pressure, they will lose wickets. When England bowl first and bat second, both disciplines can’t operate in these conditions compared to when they bat first.

    The basics of the game, you have to win the first 20 mins of every session and you do that by starting with your best two bowlers or the next best two if they’re tired. But they started with spinners after lunch and gave the momentum to Pakistan.

    I give credit to Pakistan, they’re a tremendous cricket team to watch; high class with huge amount of skill. It’s a step up from the West Indies series, the expertise Pakistan have thrown at England.

    When the opposing team bat first and get a decent score, it’s been a common trend for England over the last three or four years, under Root’s leadership, that they struggle. They seem to lose focus when bowling first.

  7. However, it was Shan Masood who anchored Pakistan, helped by Shadab Khan and an afternoon session where England's bowlers lost their lines, lengths and patience.

    The pace bowlers have everything. The speed of Naseem and Shaheen bowling at 85mph, swinging it both ways. Then Abbas who has enough skill and abillity to get anyone out.

  9. England claimed three wickets in the morning and Pakistan were going nowhere quickly. The hosts would have been delighted to see the back of Babar Azam in the first over of the day.

    Very happy with that, start of the day belonged to England who were brilliant but they allowed Pakistan to get settled. I thought Shadab Khan and Shan Masood were very special.

    The last session, the Pakistan bowlers were just absolutely brilliant.

    It's a vociferous appeal but I think Jos Buttler is home by a mile.
