How they have led to the empowerment of Indian village women
In 1992 the Indian government passed the 73rd Amendment which gave formal recognition to village councils. The Amendment also stated that one third of seats on these councils were to be reserved for women.
A new film is a fictional account of what has happened since the Amendment was passed.Ìý It's the story of Shyama, who is persuaded by her husband's family to stand, thinking that through her they can wield their own influence.
Martha talks to the film's director, Ananya Chatterjee about making the film, Second Innings,Ìýand the real life the real life politics behind it.
