Now, here in Britain, we rarely go barefoot in the street. And our feet only really get shown to the world during the summer, when it's warm enough to wear sandals.
But in eastern countries, feet are often on display, so women regularly decorate and adorn them. In addition, in India, there are all sorts of rules and rituals regarding feet.
It's seen as respectful, for instance, to touch the feet of an elder. But it's considered rude to wear shoes indoors, or to show the soles of the feet to someone when you're sitting down.
In India, it seems, there's more to the foot than meets the eye, as Clare Jenkins has been finding out.
