Ìý What's Gone Wrong with Sex Education? Tuesday 17 June 2003 Ìý
Image: teenage boys learning about condoms
Last week MPs attacked our "Benny Hill" attitude toward sex, blaming it for spiralling rates of teenage STIs. They called for sex advice clinics in schools to combat what they called a "patchy and inconsistent" health education system.

Yet only days later family groups and some head teachers were condemning a new sex education guide as "sordid" and considering use of forthcoming legislation to prevent teachers talking about relationships with pupils at all.
Fiona Clampin visits Paignton Community School and talks to students about their school's teenage advice centre. Professor Michael Reiss of the Institute of Education, and Gill Frances of the Children's Education Bureau join Jenni to ask what has gone so wrong with sex education, how can we deal with what is fast becoming a public health crisis and why we can't seem to get beyond our "nudge-nudge, wink-wink" approach to the whole topic?
