Twenty years ago, a Sheffield schoolteacher called Tony Tigwell wrote a book about a Muslim girl and her daily life in a village outside the northern Indian city of Varanasi.
Sakina in India shows the 10 year old fetching water from the well, tending the family goat, and sitting cross legged at school, writing on a slate. Last year, Tony discovered that Sakina had died in childbirth aged 29, leaving behind two daughters and a son.
Clare Jenkins, a friend of his, visited Sakina's family to talk to them about the little girl whose story went round the world, to find out whether women's lives have changed in rural India over the past two decades.
