There are high hopes this weekend that the Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Chee may be released after years of house arrest under the military regime.
The Nobel Peace prize winner returned to her country in 1988, leaving her husband and two children behind in Britain. (He died here of cancer three years ago). In 1990 her pro democracy party won a landslide victory but the junta refused to relinquish power.
Nita May is a journalist at the Burmese section of the Â鶹ԼÅÄ World Service. She herself spent eighteen months in prison in Burma for her opposition to the regime.
