Between 1995 and 1999, 21 of the 5,600 Catholic priests in England and Wales were convicted of child abuse.
Eileen Shearer is an agnostic who has just been hired by the Church to help stamp out sex abuse.
Her new post as head of the Catholic Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults is the result of the Church's acceptance of a report by a committee headed by Lord Nolan which recommended changes to the way it deals with allegations of abuse.
Eileen starts her new job this week and she tells Jenni what she plans for the post.
