Teen mums 23 March 2010
A young mother and her baby
Should they be encouraged to stay longer in education?

70%Ìýof teenage mums in England are currentlyÌýnot in education or training. When the school leaving age rises from 16Ìýto 18 in 2015, it's estimated 20,000 girls under 18 who become mothers every year will be affected. Children’s charity Barnardos is calling for an expansion in childcare provision and a change of attitude by schools. Jane asks Anne Pinney from Barnardos, and Harriet Sergeant from the Centre for Policy Studies, whether we should be encouraging more teen mums in the classroom.
