In 1993 Anne Ward killed her stepfather for raping a close family member.
The courts had decided there was not enough evidence against him and she took the law into her own hands.
At her own trial she was cleared of murder and served just nine months.
Since then Anne has dedicated her life to raising awareness of violence against women and children.
This week she received the Emma Humphrey's Memorial Award - awarded by the Justice for Women organisation - for the work she has achieved in Doncaster.
She talks to Jenni about the fight against domestic violence.
