An update on the reported sexual violence
In January 2006 Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the first democratically elected female head of state in Africa, took office in Liberia, Africa's oldest republic. Liberia had emerged from 14 years of civil war, during which women and girls experienced unprecedented levels of sexual violence, with 3 in 4 women, in some regions, having been raped. But evidence suggests that violence against women remains an extensive problem during this post-conflict era. Jane is joined by Liz Blunt, the former West Africa Correspondent for the Â鶹ԼÅÄ and Emily Bell from Médecins Sans Frontières who has been working with victims of sexual violence in Liberia. |
