A project to stop institutionalised prostitution
On the outskirts of Delhi the Khanabadosi community, once a nomadic tribe, have institutionalized prostitution as a way of life. Every day married girls take to the highways to meet their clients - passing truck driversÌý- while their husbands and mother-in-laws look after the children. The mother-in-laws themselves will have worked as sex workers until they were too old to attract clients. Sunita Thakur meets some of these women and the NGO Apneaap that has recently begun working with them to explore alternative livelihoods. |
