Registering the millions of unofficial children across the world
Approximately 350,000 children are born worldwide every day. In the UK the registration of every birth is taken for granted, and with it the recognition of every child. Yet according to UNICEF, there are around 51m children born every year across the globe who do not officially exist. That means no birth certificate, no identity card, no passport, no proof of age or parentage. The children’s charity Plan International has just completed a five year campaign for Universal Birth Registration, managing to register 40m children who did not exist. Plan’s UK Director Marie Staunton and Professor Heaven Crawley from the University of Swansea join Jane to discuss the campaign and why the issue of child registration is so important.
