Are these religious schools linked to Islamic fundamentalism?
Since the late 1970s there has been a huge expansion in the number of religious schools for girls in Pakistan. They are known as madrasahs, and one of the most high profile was attached to the radical Red Mosque in Islamabad.ÌýThis was the site of a long siege, and a number of deaths, after it was stormed by the authorities in 2007. But why are more and more families sending their girls to religious schools? Are they linked to Islamic fundamentalism or was the Red Mosque a one off? Dr Masooda Bano from Wolfson College Oxford has been awarded a £400,000 grant to study the schools. She speaks to Jenni, along with Dr Farzana Sheikh, the author of ‘Making Sense of Pakistan’.
