The pink knickers campaign
Recently in India a national debate has developed about culturally acceptable behaviour for women. A right wing Hindu group, known as Sri Ram Sena attacked a female group who frequent bars in Delhi, the ‘Consortium of Pub-going, Loose and Forward Women’. They say that the women's behaviour is anti-Indian culture. The "Pink Chaddi Campaign" (chaddi meaning knickers) was set up to protest against what was regarded as an assault against modern women. Over 27,000 women and men have joined and the campaign which asked their members to send a pair of pink knickers each to Sri Ram Sena. The Â鶹ԼÅÄ correspondent, Rupa Jha, joins Jane from Delhi to explain why emotions run high on both sides in this situation. |
