Winning the Royal Cross

Major Janet Pilgrim has been awarded a rare Royal Red Cross, the army medics equivalent of the Victoria Cross. In 2007 she commanded Basra air base’s field hospital in Iraq, while serving with The Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps.Ìý Under constant enemy fire,ÌýMajor PilgrimÌýremained a rock of calm in charge of the busiest military field hospital since the Falklands war.Ìý She’s been compared to Florence Nightingale, who in 1883 became the Royal Red Cross’s first winner for her devotion to the sick in the Crimean War. Jenni talks to Major Pilgrim about her work and her award.
