The population timebomb 05Feb 2010
Is the current explosion set to become an implosion?

The dangers of a rapidly rising population were first highlighted nearly 200 years ago when Malthus warned that it could end in pandemic, war and famine. Since then the threat of the “people time bomb” has been ever present. Now climate change is putting the issue of overpopulation high up the environmental agenda once again. The world’s population now stands at nearly 7 billion and is set to rise to 9 billion by 2050. But with fertility rates across the world falling is the current population explosion set to become an implosion? Jenni is joined by Fred Pearce, science journalist and author of "Peoplequake" and Karen Newman from the Population and Sustainability Network to discuss the issues.

"Peoplequake: mass migration, ageing nations and the coming population crash" by Fred Pearce is published by Eden Project Books on 4th February priced £12.99 ISBN 9781 905 811342
