Social
Sexism and the City - Maternity Rights 21 OctÌý2009
How maternity rightsÌýimpact on women’s success at work.

This week the Treasury Committee has been looking at how women are treated in the City of London and other high financial businesses. Among other issues, they have discussed whetherÌýmaternity rights haveÌýgone too far. The law gives special protection to pregnant women at work; they have rights to paid time off for antenatal care, statutory maternity leave and may get maternity pay or a maternity allowance. But what effect doÌýmaternity rights have on women’s success at work? Do they risk backfiring on women andÌýwhat’s the impact on the employer and other employees? Jenni is joined by Sarah Veale,ÌýHead of Equality and Employment Rights at the TUC and Catherine Hakim, Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology at the LSE.
