Social
Specialist services for abused women 30ÌýJan 2009
Local councils are being threatened with legal action.

Over 100 councils are being threatened with legal action because they’re failing to provide support for abused women. A report published today says that a quarter of of local authorities have no specialised services for women who have been raped or are the victims of domestic violence. Now, the Equality and Human Rights Commission says it will exercise its powers of prosecution unless councils meet their obligations. Jenni is joined by Constance McCullagh, who is the author of Funny and Peculiar which catalogues the abuse she suffered as a child, Liz Kelly; co-author of the report ‘Map of Gaps’ and Chair of ‘End Violence Against Women,’ Trevor Phillips, chair of the Equality and Human RightsÌýCommission andÌýVera Baird, theÌýSolicitor General, toÌýdiscuss the issues.
