Women Bishops 11 Nov 2009
Will attempts to avoid further splits in the Church of England create unacceptable sexual discrimination?

Attempts are being made to avoid further splits in the Church of EnglandÌýin the eventÌýof the eventual appointment of women bishops. In order to appease parishioners and clergy opposed to female bishops, who may be appointed in their diocese, the General SynodÌýis having to consider whether to allow male bishops to 'fly in' and perform certain functions, such as communion and confirmation, for those dissenters. But will this move not fundamentally undermine the role of women bishops by creating a category of second class bishops and allow unacceptable sexual discrimination? Jenni talks toÌýRobert Key MP for Salisbury and member of the General Synod, who will draw attention to this issue in an adjournment debate in the House of Commons today. They are joined byÌýVivienne Goddard, also a member of the General Synod, who opposes the ordination of women.
