Real Lives in North Korea 16 Feb 2010
Barbara Demick and Mrs Song
On the world's most secretive state

If you look at the world from outer space at night, there isÌýblackness where North Korea should be. That’s because the country doesn’t have enough electricity to light up the dark.Ìý In a rare insight into the lives of ordinary people living in the most totalitarian state, the award winning journalist Barbara Demick in her new book 'Nothing to Envy' has spoken to North Korean defectors about love, family life and the terrible cost of the famine in the hermit state. Barbara joins Jenni to discuss.

"Nothing to Envy" by Barbara Demick is published by Granta on 18th February 2010 ISBN 978-1 84708 0141
Barbara will be speaking about North Korea with Lindsey Hilsum at the Royal Festival Hall in London on the 16th February 2010 at 7.
