The Piano 24ÌýDecÌý2009

Should every home have one?

Once upon a time families delighted in a sing-song around this classic instrument. But what about nowadays? Architects increasingly design houses for watching television in. Musical appreciationÌýis all about being in a private and enclosed space -Ìýlistening on mobile phones and laptops with earplugs or in the bedroom with the door shut. Jane discusses whether public affection for the piano really is waning. Is the brown or black upright just another thing that'sÌýbound to go out of fashion? Or is there something magical about the non-electric keyboard? Jane discusses the issue with Toner Quinn, Editor of The Journal of Music and the broadcaster Susan Jeffreys. And reporter Lizz Pearson visits a family who love their piano.
