Programme 3: Diet and Drugs

Wednesday 24 April 2002, 9.00-9.30pm

This series gets inside the finest sporting bodies and minds and uncovers what exactly is going on to make them work so effectively. It reveals how science is being used to improve performance at the very highest level.

Sue Nelson presents the series, with contributions from sprinter Dougie Walker - who failed a nandrolone test but was subsequently cleared by UK athletics, Olympic gold medalist Dr. Stephanie Cook, UK Sport's director of anti-doping Michelle Veroken, Dr. Asker Jeukendrup of Birmingham University, Professor Bengt Saltin - member of the World Anti-Doping Authority, Professor Ron Maughm of Aberdeen University and Jane Griffen - nutritional advisor to the London Irish rugby team.

3. Diet and Drugs - In the final part of the series, Sue Nelson examines how elite athletes eat to compete and why, in the pursuit of perfection, some athletes resort to taking drugs, despite the dangers.

She finds out what makes the best diet, why competitors feel the need to take dietary supplements and how the anti-doping authorities are always playing catch-up with the drug cheats.

Dougie Walker reveals how scientific evidence has proved that his positive nandrolone test was caused by an infected supplement and Professor Bengt Saltin predicts a future of gene doping - where gene manipulation can be abused to create the perfect athlete.
