Programme 1: Psychology

Wednesday 10 April 2002, 9.00-9.30pm

This series gets inside the finest sporting bodies and minds and uncovers what exactly is going on to make them work so effectively. It reveals how science is being used to improve performance at the very highest level.

Sue Nelson presents the series, with contributions from golfer Nick Faldo, ex-England cricket captain Alec Stewart, ex-England rugby captain Will Carling, Irish rugby captain Keith Wood, Tottenham Hotspur's team psychologist John Syer, Professor Dave Collins of Edinburgh University and the England team psychologist for the Commonwealth games Dr. Kirsten Barnes.

Will Carling and Alec Stewart

1. Psychology - The first programme of the series looks at the subject of psychology in sport, specifically the different needs of a team and an individual. It deals with how mental training is applied to the preparation for an event, during the performance itself and then the aftermath, whether it's victory or defeat. The programme also looks at instinct - how the brain copes with decision making within a fraction of second and how psychological techniques can help this process.

Will Carling discusses how he coped with the famous grand slam defeat by Scotland at Murrayfield in 1990. Alec Stewart talks about facing 90mph cricket balls and the mental endurance needed when building a big innings. And we join Keith Wood in the Lions dressing room as he delivers a motivational team talk before a crucial match.
