Chris Sperring's first close encounter with owls happened when he was eight years old. Roaming in his local fields one autumn evening, he sat in a tree and hooted at the owls he could hear around him. To his surprise a tawny owl came to investigate and landed in the tree right next to him. Chris was hooked.
Since then he has honed his natural ability to mimic and call to owls to the extent that he has used this as a scientific survey tool. He is now the Conservation Officer for the Hawk and Owl Trust and has spent years observing the tawny and barn owls around the Somerset Levels, developing an intimate understanding of their lives. In a Life with Owls he takes Grant Sonnex to the places that have been most significant to him, watches a hunting barn owl on the Mendip Hills, and tries to call a tawny owl back to the very same tree where one visited him as a child.
