Summer Parodies Competition - The Winners
18 July 2003

summer logoShakespeare, Laurie Lee and Paul Simon were among the authors bent to your will in our Summer Parodies competition.

We asked you to write a parody of an existing literary piece, or in the style of a particular author or genre. The parody had to be Archers-related, and have some connection with Midsummer's Day. Entries were judged on relevance to the Midsummer theme and to the material parodied, Archers content, and wit.

Two winners receive a signed copy of The Archers: 1987-2000 - Back To The Land, the final novel in Joanna Toye's trilogy retelling the story of the Archer family over the last five decades.

The winner in the prose section is "Clint Driftwood" for his epic Dickens parody A Midsummer's Carol. Read part one.

The winner in the verse section is "Jenny Darling" who borrowed from Coleridge for The Ancient Midsummer Melody.

Five runners-up will win Archers pens:

Phyllis Doris for Cider with Shula (Laurie Lee)
Careen Grange for There's a Hole in my Pentop (Trad - we think)
Chris Hanson for Time Team or What you Will (W. Shakespeare/Time Team)
Tony Keen for In The Midsummer Sun (Anthony Shaffer/The Wicker Man)
Liz Simpson for The Midsummer Mashque (Caryl Brahms and SJ Simon)

Judging - particularly choosing the two overall winners - was a very difficult task, and we thank all those who entered.

All the entries were posted on the Fantasy Archers topic of The Archers message board, which features a constant flow of high quality fantasies and literary parodies.

The listeners' parodies section of this website contains a selection of some of the wonderful parodies which listeners have written in the past.
