Reporter Profiles

Rod McKenzie

Rod McKenzie

Editor, Newsbeat

Where are you from?
Inverness.

What were you doing before Radio 1?
Journo on London's Capital Radio.

Part of the job you are most proud of?
Editing the best radio news team in the world.

Worst on air moment?
Forgot my scripts for a live news bulletin and realised they were four flights of stairs (five minutes away) only one minute from being on air. I ad-libbed the bulletin... not great.

Three words that describe you:
Serious, happy, lucky.

Advice to anyone who wants to get started in journalism:
It's harder than ever before. Get a good qualification and work very hard to impress. Listen to advice and offer help.

Where would you like to be in 10 years' time?
On a beach (fat chance!).

What's on your walls at home?
Cricket and African wildlife.

Who would you most like to interview?
Winston Churchill.

If you could be famous, what would you be famous for?
Cricket.

Who's your favourite news reporter?
All Newsbeat and 1Xtra TX reporters are current faves (slight bias here!).

I spend my time off...
Playing or watching cricket, trying to help the kids with homework, oh and ringing the office.

If wasn't editor of Newsbeat I'd be....
...something less exciting.
