Vernyuy Tina and Witty Minstrel both come from the war-torn Anglophone north-west region of Cameroon. The two artists belong to the Nso community, and even though they have been unable to perform in, or even visit, their homeland for several years, they are both determined to keep the rich Nso culture alive.

Vernyuy Tina has coined the phrase Afronjang to describe her blend of traditional northwest rhythms and other Afro sounds, and her unique style has got her noticed. She was named best female artist from central Africa at the AFRIMA All Africa Music Awards 2022.

Witty Minstrel also adds hip-hop flavours to some of his njang songs in his quest to help Cameroonian music reach global audiences. But, as he explains to This Is Africa, he is just as keen to reach young Cameroonians who are cut off from their culture because of the conflict.

Both artists also use their videos to display the colourful and distinctive attire of Cameroon’s north-west, and take pride in the uniqueness of their hand made garments.
