US Midterm Results: The View From Minnesota
With the US mid-term elections just about wrapped up, Fergus Nicoll broadcasts live from St. Paul, Minnesota
With the US mid-term elections just about wrapped up, Fergus Nicoll broadcasts live from St. Paul, Minnesota. One notable result of this year’s election cycle is the higher count of women heading to the US congress, and we’ll take a look at one such newcomer congresswoman, the Somali-American Democrat Ilhan Omar, who won Minnesota's 5th congressional district with over 78% of the vote.
We’ll also hear what some young Minnesotans think about the elections and the future of their country. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s Will Bain travelled to the University of Minnesota campus to hear what got several of these young people out to vote.
Meanwhile we get a bigger perspective on the political arc of Minnesota, and the country in general, from former Republican Governor of Minnesota Arne Carlson. He served for 12 years from 1979 to 1991 but he has since parted ways with the GOP and we’ll hear why he’s not likely to be celebrating the Republican hold on the Senate.
And all through the show Fergus is joined by Professor Larry Jacobs of the Humphrey School of Political Science at the University of Minnesota; Sam Brodey, Washington Correspondent for Minnpost.com, and Andrew Peaple of the Wall Street Journal in Hong Kong.
