What was the most memorable part of the experience?
My life in Edinburgh makes me so busy... that I haven’t thought once of what I’d do when retired
I think being in Puducherry was the most fundamental cultural experience for me. The mixture of traditions and the wonderful Gratitude guest house, with Lord Ganesh in the garden!
What surprised you the most?
That everyone got on so well, despite us all being venerable in our old ways and being known in the UK. Remarkably little ‘ego’ trouble, I thought.
What was your role within the group?
I don’t think I had a role, but I liked everyone who went on the trip. I always make friends with the crew, when I’m filming too, so that was a lovely new experience for me, working with so many new, young people. I’m still in touch with Susie and Henry in particular, but feel proud to have met such a diverse group of folks as these.
Did the experience allow you time to reflect?
Yes, I want to go back to India, beautiful India, having never been before. What an ancient and magical place it is. As far as living there, my life in Edinburgh makes me so busy, singing and travelling around, that I haven’t thought once of what I’d do when retired, but Marigold helped me think of that time.
Did you learn anything about yourself?
Yes, that I’m a pacifier and tend to look kindly at people. I always want people to get on with each other, and I also notice the staff around us, as I want them to have a positive view of us.
Would you return to India?
I would like to use my musical abilities there. There are so many similarities between Indian and British folk music.
Tell us about one of your adventures…
When we went looking for a place to swim but being advised not to do that at Puducherry itself, perhaps because of currents, we were taken to a lovely fishing village up the coast. However, I was stunned by the piles of rubbish I saw at the edge of the village. This seems to be a major problem in India. Open ‘dumps’ on the periphery of every place. However, it was the only time I swam in the sea and it was a great experience. Many more happy memories.
