Cambridge born Nick Mulvey is no stranger to the music scene. Until 2011, he was one of the members of Mercury-nominated jazz outfit Portico Quartet, where he played the Hang, a sort of steel drum invented in Switzerland 13 years ago.

All I wanted to do was play my instrument every day, to be in a room on my own and study my heroes
Nick Mulvey

For his solo career, he’s switched to the guitar – mixing Latin-style finger picking with a rhythmic strumming style.

A multi-instrumentalist, he holds a degree in music from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, and had early input from his mother, an opera singer, and grandmother, a pianist. He’s also been influenced by his Cuban and Congolese guitar tutors, giving his playing a global scope.

While writing and recording his first solo EP, Fever to the Form, the 26-year-old immersed himself in music and studied the work of artists such as Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Nick Drake.

Signed to Fiction, owned by Mumford and Sons’ Ben Lovett, the singer has even covered Olive’s 1990s dance classic You’re Not Alone on his song Nitrous.
