Javert’s unfaltering belief in duty and the law makes him a relentless, fearless nemesis for Jean Valjean. The son of criminals, Javert believes that men like him have only two choices: to prey on society or to guard it. Javert develops a particular fascination with Jean Valjean, whom he believes to be long past redemption. Javert is determined to root out his old enemy whatever it takes.
