Nils Kavanagh is a 22-year-old pianist originally from Sligo, Ireland. Beginning piano lessons at age six, Nils was introduced to jazz music at 16 through the Sligo Jazz Project festival and summer school. First learning from local piano teachers he quickly developed a love for jazz and improvisation. In 2020 Nils studied under Scott Flanigan, one of Ireland’s top jazz pianists and educators, which enabled him to move to Cardiff to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2021.
In 2022, Nils won the Young Irish Jazz Musician of the Year award, and in 2023 he went on a six-date tour with his trio across Ireland, featuring as the Young Artist in Residence at Sligo Jazz Project that year. Directly following the tour, Nils recorded his debut album, set to be released early next year. Currently working as a professional musician in the United Kingdom and throughout Ireland, Nils is in his final year of Jazz Performance at the RWCMD in Cardiff.
