DI Frank Williams was formerly a sergeant major with an Army Commando unit in Italy, during World War Two andΒ later earned himself an outstanding record from working in South London.

Frank acknowledged in his autobiography βAmong criminals I had the reputation of being a hard man, but one who would deal fairly with anyone caught.β
HeΒ specialised in running informants and indeed he had received information weeks before the robbery that Reynolds was planning βsome crimeβ. However,Β observation on his flat in Putney was difficult andΒ made more so by the fact that Reynolds often used a motorcycle on his reconnoitring excursions.
Jack Slipper remembered Frank as βa very quiet man who was always deep in thought." He saidΒ his speciality was "dealing with informants and I donβt think Iβve ever come across anyone who was better at it.β
Frank was partnered by Detective Steve Moore who later said: βI rated Frank very highly, he was very well informed.β
