Steve Lamacq cut his teeth in journalism working as a Junior Reporter at the 'West Essex Gazette'. He was the country’s youngest ever newspaper Sports Editor at the age of just 21.

However, music was Steve’s true passion and he was soon living the dream going to gigs and hanging out after with the bands in order to report it all back in his unique down-to-earth-non-star-struck-fashion, giving an inside track to the burgeoning UK music scene for the 'NME' and 'Melody Maker'. His knack of spotting the next big think soon became apparent as he was one of the first to report the emerging Britpop scene.

Sharing his record collection – often demos handed to him in the pub – he started DJing on XFM (then a pirate radio station) and a music broadcaster was born!

Radio 1 came knocking and the result was four years co-presenting 'The Evening Session' with Jo Whiley.

During this time, Steve was also part responsible for setting up the label Deceptive Records whose biggest success story in its nine years was Elastica.

Having been on-air for almost 25 years now, Steve’s still as interested and excited by music as he was when he wrote for his teenage fanzine 'A Pack of Lies'.

Not one to sit still, he's busy every night of the week, sharing his new findings with us here on Radio 2 every Wednesday night from 2300 and he can also be heard 1600 – 1900 Monday to Friday on 6 Music.

Sometimes known as 'Lammo' (given to him by John Peel) or 'The Cat '(due to his ability as a goalkeeper), Steve's arguably the most famous fan of Colchester United.

His autobiography, 'Going Deaf For A Living', was published in 2001.
