How do you find life on the road?
I really enjoy being able to travel the country and learn more about our fascinating culture and history.
What is your favourite part of your role?
Meeting lots of interesting people, and hearing about their lives and interests.
Why did you choose a career in antiques?
I discovered early on that a 9-5 job was never going to be for me, so I turned my childhood love of old and dusty junk and antique shops into my job and, later, career.
What would you do for a living if you weren’t working in the antiques trade?
I would like to work in sport. In my youth I had a job as a road manager and team member of The Flying Skis, an aerial ski stunt team! Any job in sport would have been great.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to work in antiques?
Study hard and learn all you can about your chosen field, and don’t expect to make a fortune, but you can make a living, and never make anything up - you’ll get found out!
How did you get involved in Bargain Hunt?
I was doing some other TV work and was approached by Bargain Hunt.
Which fairs do you particularly like shopping at when ‘bargain hunting’?
When the weather is good, an outdoor fair is fun and when the weather is bad inside. As to which fair, I have no favourites; there are bargains at all of them.
What’s the most profit / greatest loss you’ve made at auction?
I have selective amnesia when it comes to anything that made a loss (and there have been one or two). The most exciting item I sold at auction was one of Admiral Lord Nelson’s signed wills.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Chocolate!
How do you spend your free time?
I like to spend my free time relaxing at home in the Kent countryside. Walking the dog to the local pub on a Sunday lunchtime has become a family tradition. Other interests include skiing, tennis, playing bridge, reading and the occasional game of poker.
Do you collect anything?
I collect anything and everything, much to the annoyance of my wife. My latest collecting bug is sporting items.
Why do you think BH has such appeal?
BH has great appeal because no matter how much you think you know, BH will always come up with something you didn’t.
Why would you encourage anyone to appear on BH?
It’s a great fun show with interaction between the contestants and expert. Add to the mix all the other ingredients, and it’s a recipe for a great fun experience!
