A jiu-jitsu trained constable in the new Women’s Police Service, Miss Anna White arrives in Folkestone tasked with “ridding the district of many of the undesirable women who come here for immoral purposes”. The sharper assistant to , she is conscious that the perceived problem of prostitution requires a new approach on behalf of both men and women.

The unmarried and unconventional Miss White therefore receives a great deal of hostility from men, including some within the existing police force, who are resistant to the changes in traditional gender roles brought about by war conditions.
