Leicester's secret railway tunnel beneath Glenfield

Designed by railway engineer George Stephenson Glenfield Tunnel is just over a mile long.

Glenfield Tunnel was the longest steam railway tunnel in the world when it opened in 1832.

Designed by the famous railway engineer George Stephenson, the tunnel is just over a mile long, and formed part of the Leicester and Swannington railway network.

The railway brought coal from coalfields in North West Leicestershire into Leicester to be distributed by canal all over the country. It was the first steam railway in the Midlands and one of the first in the world.
