Leicester’s once proud tramway system
The first tram route in Leicester was in 1874 from the Clock Tower to Belgrave.
Leicester once had a proud tramway system. The first trams in the city started as a horse-pulled operation in 1874 with the first route from the Clock Tower to Belgrave.
By 1901 Leicester Corporation had taken over the tramways and the network was expanded in 1904 with lines to Highfields, Clarendon Park, Western Park and Narborough Road.
The Stoneygate Tram Depot was built in 1904 to coincide with the introduction of electric trams in the city. It held six trams which each week carried tens of thousands of passengers on Leicester’s streets.
The building stands today as one of the few remaining in the country – Ben Jackson has been to look round.
